I always find that highly distracting and disrespectful to the music. That way you won't hear the CD stop sound (caused by the return of the laser pickup in the optical deck) immediately. Sometimes I add a little space at the end of the album if the last track is a calm or beautiful track. Or surprise the listener with a sudden impact at any time on the album if the effect is needed. Much like an encore for a live band or orchestra usually takes place a bit later. Listening at loud levels will almost certainly make the spaces too long when you're dealing with fades.īefore the final track on the album I could make the pause a little longer to prepare for what is the end of the album. Listening at lower levels (I do this at around 70 dB SPL A/slow) can help evaluate the proper spacing. If a track fades in I could place it quite close to the prior track. If the ballad has a fade out I'll probably place the fifth track very close. That will bring down the pace in advance and prepare the listener. If the fourth track is a downtempo track, I'll make a little more space in front of that. That way they'll comprise a set and get the party started, so to speak.
